In 1996, the Joseph Project was inspired by a prophetic word that NOW is the time to prepare for massive immigration to Israel of at least a million Jewish people from Eastern Europe and Russia in the near future. The Beta Yisrael—the black Ethiopian Jewish people—emerged from obscurity to world awareness in 1991, when Israel rescued and transported over 14,000 of the Beta Yisrael to Israel. Unfortunately, over 50,000 people were left in refugee camps. They are in abject poverty all because they profess faith in Yeshua/Jesus. Operation Tikvah’s goal is to bring aid and comfort to these precious people as they wait to immigrate to Israel, as well as provide vocational training and education for the children. REAF is strategically allied with Messianic and Christian agencies in Eastern Europe for the purpose of helping the “poorest of the poor” in the Former Soviet Union (FSU) to make aliyah (to immigrant) to Israel and escape the rising anti-Semitism and crushing poverty.
